Geocache Description:

What Is A Floodplain

floodplain or flood plain is an area of land adjacent to a stream or river which stretches from the banks of its channel to the base of the enclosing valley walls, and which experiences flooding during periods of high water level.

What Is The Grand River?

The Grand River is a large river in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It also lies along the western fringe of the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario which overlaps the eastern portion of southwestern Ontario along the length of this river. From its source near Wareham, Ontario, it flows south through Grand Valley, Fergus, Elora, Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Paris, Brantford, Caledonia, and Cayuga before emptying into the north shore of Lake Erie south of Dunnville at Port Maitland. One of the scenic and spectacular features of the river is the falls and Gorge at Elora.

The Grand River is the largest river that is entirely within southern Ontario's boundaries. The river owes its size to the unusual fact that its source is relatively close to the base of the Bruce Peninsula, yet it flows southwards to Lake Erie, rather than to central Lake Huron or Georgian Bay (most southern Ontario rivers flow into the nearest Great Lake, which is why most of them are small), thus giving it more distance to take in more water from tributaries.

What Is A Dike?

A dike is an area in spots prone to flooding where the land has been raised to prevent flooding. here it is next to the floodplain down below to stop the park from flooding. although it does not work 100 percent of the time... Kinsmen Park Usually Recieves Some Flooding During The Spring Flood.

What Will I See Here?

Here you will see a park. (or a lake if you are in the spring lol) with a river and a dike. the river is on the other side of the dike from the posted coords. you will notice the park is level with the river, but the dike is higher up, that is so that when the river water level gets higher, the water doesnt come into the park and flood it. alothough this doesnt work all the time. you may notice that there are 2 spots where flooding has caused an issue before. the first one is down by the dam on the flat spot. there the water levels have risen and completely flooded this park. the other spot is down near the bridge. as the dike gets closer to the bridge you will notice that it gets shorter. this causes huge issues when the water levels get high and water can run down in.

Logging Tasks

1. Go To The Posted Coordinates. Estimate The Height Of The Dike.

2. At the time of your visit, walk around the park. is the ground mushy?

3. go to stage 2 estimate the height of the dike down towards the water side.

4. take a photo at stage 2
