"The Touge(mountain pass)" station in the Oou main line on the Itaya pass is well known as a difficult place caused by a steep grade and heavy snowfall. The altitude of the station is 626m high and is the highest station in the Oou main line. Until 1990, the opening of business of the Yamagata Shinkansen, the local train moving with the locomotive traction climbed the pass by switchback. Besides, it is tremendous that the train took the switchback in 4 stations "Akaiwa", "Itaya", "Touge" and “Oosawa”. The opening of business of the station was very old and the station was installed at first as "the Touge signal station" in 1899. The main railroad facilities in the Itaya pass are covered with very large snow shelters to protect the points and so on from snow. These shelters are used as a roof of station house now and produced a unique atmosphere now. The station is in a deep mountain and the access by car is serious for the thin, steep and bendin mountain path. Furthermore, this station is the nearest station to go to "Ubayu spa" and "Namegawa spa" which is well known as a secret hot spring, but it takes more than two hours on foot to the hot spring.
ここは急勾配と豪雪による難所として知られている“板谷峠”にある奥羽本線の“峠”駅です。
駅の標高は626mで奥羽本線で最も高く、文字通り“峠”に位置する駅です。
平成2年の山形新幹線の開業まで、機関車牽引の普通列車はスイッチバックで登っていました。しかも、“赤岩”、“板谷”、“峠”、“大沢”の4駅が連続してスイッチバックという凄まじさでした。
駅の開業は明治32年で非常に古く、当初は“峠信号所”として設置されました。
板谷峠にある主な鉄道施設はポイントなどを雪から守るため広大なスノーシェルターで覆われています。現在、このシェルターは新線化によってホームの屋根としても流用され独特の雰囲気を醸し出しています。
駅は奥深い山中にあり、峠に至る道路は細くて急勾配の屈曲した山道のため車でのアクセスも大変です。
さらにこの駅は、秘湯で知られる“姥湯温泉”や“滑川温泉”に行くための最寄駅になりますが、温泉までは徒歩で２時間以上かかります。
筆者がこの駅で、キャッシュの設置場所を探してウロウロしているとき、いきなり轟音と共に「つばさ」が通り過ぎてびっくりしました。
