Østre Gasværk blev opført i 1878 som byens andet gasværk. Det efterfulgte byens første gasværk, Vestre Gasværk, der ikke længere kunne følge med efterspørgslen.
Værket blev udvidet flere gange til firedobbelt kapacitet i årene 1883-1885 og 1894-1901. Det var under første udvidelse at gasværkets anden gasbeholder, som i dag huser Østre Gasværk Teater, blev bygget. Gasbeholderen, der blev tegnet af Martin Nyrop, er den eneste af gasværkets bygninger, der er bevaret i dag.
Østre Gasværk blev taget ud af drift i 1969, og i slutningen af 1980'erne blev det besluttet, at grunden skulle renses, så der kunne bygges på området. Det viste sig at grunden var så svært forurenet at man i stedet valgte at overdække området, så udsivende gasser kunne opfanges. I dag er der fodboldbaner på det meste af grunden.
Østre Gasværk Teater. Teatersalen ligger i den runde murskal, der indtil 1979 husede den gamle gastank, og er et af Københavns mest storslåede teaterrum. Østre Gasværk Teater administreres i dag af Østerbro Teater.
På især Morten Grunwalds og Pelle Sadolins initiativ blev der fra 1979 opført teaterforestillinger i det gamle gasværk.
Der er 812 faste pladser i salen + 12 såkaldte pude-pladser, samt mulighed for at øge dette antal med 200-250 pladser, ved stole på gulvet.

The Eastern Gasworks was built in 1878 as the city's second gas building. It followed the city's first, Vestre Gasværk, which could no longer keep up with demand.
The work was expanded several times to quadruple capacity in the years 1883-1885 and 1894-1901. It was during the first expansion that the gas house second gas tank, which today houses the Eastern Gasworks Theater, was built. The gas tank, designed by Martin Nyrop, is the only one of the gas buildings preserved today.
Østre Gasverk was taken out of service in 1969, and in the late 1980s it was decided that the land should be cleaned so that the area could be built. It turned out that the ground was so heavily contaminated that they chose instead to cover the area so that leaking gases could be captured. Today, there are football fields on most of the grounds.
Eastern Gasworks Theater. The theater hall is located in the round wall, which until 1979 housed the old gas tank, and is one of Copenhagen's most magnificent theater rooms. Østre Gasværk Teater is today managed by Østerbro Teater.
