ADVANCED WARNING:
Commencing in April 2026, we will start to archive many of our caches as the maintenance load is becoming a major concern as our capacity to make regular visits to our caches declines. The date has been chosen so that, apart from unforeseen circumstances, all of caches will be available to those visiting Tasmania for the Tassie Event in early March 2026. From its source to its mouth, the Mersey River flows through varied topography, rich agricultural land and many interesting centres of population. The Meandering the Mersey (MTM) series will follow, as much as practical, the course of the Mersey River with caches being placed at varying intervals. We trust you will enjoy the area.
Liena is a small rural community on the banks of the Mersey River. The river is usually quite tranquil but during periods of heavy rainfall, it can turn to a raging torrent. The extensive erosion of the banks illustrate the effects of the ferocity of the river on occasions.
The upper reaches of the Mersey River is one of many brown and rainbow trout fishing waters and draws anglers from overseas as well as from interstate and within the state. It is a controlled fishery with fishing limited to licenced anglers and those under 14 years without a licence within defined fishing seasons. Details of fishing seasons, fishing conditions (permissable lures, bag limits etc) and licences can be obtained from the Inland Fisheries Service website.
This section of the Mesey River is also very popular. On the eastern approaches to the bridge there is a Inland Fisheries information sign detailing local access rules and a code of conduct. Inspectors patrol this and all other inland fisheries with on-the-spot fines being issed to those not complying to the conditions.
