From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli to the forests of Argonne to the volcanic sands of Iwo Jima to the frigid mountains surrounding the Chosin Reservoir to the jungles of Viet Nam to the arid wastelands of Afghanistan, the Marines have always defended the United States against all adversaries. November 10, 2019 is the 244th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. According to tradition, Tun Tavern (also known as "Peggy Mullan's Red Hot Beef Steak Club") was where the United States Marines held their first recruitment drive. On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress commissioned the innkeeper and former Quaker Samuel Nicholas to raise two battalions of Marines in Philadelphia. The tavern’s manager, Robert Mullan, was the "chief Marine Recruiter." The earliest Marines were deployed aboard Continental Congress Navy vessels as sharpshooters because they were typically recruited as outstanding marksmen. Be sure to bring your appetite, your geocaching tales, and trackables to share. Happy Birthday to the Marines.
