NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK
The National Cycle Network (NCN) was officially opened in June 2000. Was established to encourage cycling throughout Britain, as well as for the purposes of bicycle touring. It was created by the charity Sustrans who were aided by a National Lottery grant. National Cycle Network Route 1 DOVER – SHETLAND, along the east coast, via London, Edinburgh, John o' Groats and Orkney.
HISTORY.
The charity Sustrans was formed in Bristol in July 1977 as CYCLEBAG (Channel Your Calf and Leg Energy Bristol Action Group) by a group of cyclists and environmentalists, motivated by emerging doubts about the desirability of over-dependence on the private car, following the 1973 oil crisis, and the almost total lack of specific provision for cyclists in most British cities. Initially they were to use disused railways.
Applied for a grant from the Millennium Commission in 1995, who granted 42.5 million, with the final payment in 2001.
Received 50 million from National Lottery funding in December 2007.
Please remember to bring TWEEZERS and something to write with. Thanks
