Chutes and Ladders, orignally an ancient Indian game called Moksha Patam, had its roots in morality lessons, on which a player's progression up the board represented a life journey complicated by virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes). The American version substitued for the Snakes so Milton Bradley could steal the game without creeping out the children.
