Washington's historic Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River was a cold dark night, the river was running with flowing ice. At about 11pm, a heavy snow and sleet storm broke. Washington’s force did not reach the east bank until around 3am on 26th December 1776. His soldiers were badly clothed and many did not have shoes.

General George Washington's and his troops moved about a mile-and-a-half inland, and then turned right onto Bear Tavern Road. Moving south about one-and-a-quarter miles down Bear Tavern Road they came upon Jacobs Creek. When they reached Jacobs Creek around 6 a.m. there was no bridge to cross. The army was delayed by having to get the men and cannon across the creek and continue onto Trenton.
