This area is pretty close to where I work. I discovered it while out on a lunchtime walk, and, of course, the first thing that occurred to me was, "This spot needs a geocache." Feel free to read the story of the name as you make your way to (or back from) the cache.
I once had a work laptop that I nicknamed Durable Stud (after a product that we used to carry). It was a clunky Dell that was a few years old but was still chugging along like a real trooper. Most of my coworkers had sleek Macbooks that were lighter than air, while I was lugging around this beast of a machine.
Two years ago today, Durable Stud was stolen out of the back seat of my car, which was parked at a Church building where I was helping a friend set up tables and chairs for his father's funeral that was to take place the following day. I didn't realize it until later that night, at which point I panicked, filed a police report, and started changing all of my passwords. I even drove around the neighborhood looking in dumpsters and things in case someone had ditched my nice laptop bag there, but found nothing.
It was probably about a week later that I got a call from the Orem police. A lady had discovered a discarded laptop next to a dumpster just a couple miles away from my neighborhood and had called it in. I was able to positively identify Durable Stud and we were joyfully reunited. (Sadly, the bag was not recovered.) Unfortunately, Durable Stud was no long in working condition. When I picked it up that there was a large, perfect shoeprint across the keyboard, evidence of mistreatment by the hooligans who had swiped it. But ultimately I felt I had gotten off easy—it could have fallen into much worse hands and been turned to much worse ends. The IT guy at work was even able to recover all my files off of Durable Stud and transferred them onto a shiny new laptop. So really, I ended up better off.
The tale of Durable Stud came to mind today as I was rummaging through my desk for a snack and found the last ingredient I needed to finish this cache: a little baggie that held the product that my laptop was named after and that would do nicely for protecting my log from moisture (I hope). I had been struggling with choosing a name for the cache up until that point. The fact that today was the second anniversary of Durable Stud's misadventure didn't occur to me until I was walking to place the cache, and just confirmed the name choice.
There are many things to learn from the tale of Durable Stud, but one that bears pointing out is this: Don't leave valuables in your car.
