Rigside and Douglas Water Community Nature Reserve, which sits between the village of Douglas Water and the river, it is a precious resource for the local community and for many from further afield. It is an oasis for birds, with many winter visitors, and animals including herons, lapwings, and geese by the hundred, whooper swans and otters. It offers access to beautiful countryside and has the potential for enhanced pathway networks. It is an opportunity to link people from the local area and beyond with nature.
Since 2018 a new generation of committee members has been trying to revitalise the reserve and create access-for-all paths to make it easier for everybody to visit. The next stage in that revitalisation will be on Sunday November 24th, we are holding a tree planting day to replace the Ash trees that have been affected by dieback disease. We have 300 trees, provided free of charge by The Woodland Trust, we will need as many people as possible to help plant them; please bring your own spade but there will not be any serious digging involved and wear wellies or boots and gloves. Children and dogs are welcome as long as they bring a responsible adult with them. Soup and Rolls will be provided around midday if we think you have worked hard enough.
Please let us know if you are coming, it will help us to work out how much soup is needed, but if you decide to come along at the last minute you will be very welcome.
