Kumagaya and the Chichibu district has a interesting relation to Kenji Miyazawa. In September, 1916 approximately 100 years ago, the Morioka high agriculture and forestry school second grader Kenji Miyazawa participated in "the trip of Chichibu, Nagatoro area geological survey" and he and his classmate started the trip from Kumagaya and went around Yorii, Nagatoro, Ogano and Chichibu from September 2 to 7. And impressionable 20-year-old young man Kenji Miyazawa composed many tankas (japanese poem) in the trip and some tankas are inscribed in a monument. Kenji Miyazawa visited various places in the journey and I installed a cache in the place.
宮沢賢治と熊谷、秩父地方には興味深い関係があります。
約百年前の大正5年9月、盛岡高等農林学校2年生の宮沢賢治は学校が主催する「秩父・長瀞方面 地質調査の旅」に参加し、級友ら25名と9月２日から７日にかけて熊谷から寄居、長瀞、小鹿野、秩父、三峯山と各地を巡りました。
そして、多感な二十歳の青年宮沢賢治は旅の先々で多くの短歌を詠み、その一部は現在歌碑として刻まれています。
宮沢賢治が道中各地で心を動かされ、短歌を詠んだ場所にキャッシュを設置しました。
賢治の足跡を辿り、賢治が詠んだ句を通して、当時の賢治の心境に思いを馳せてみませんか。
On Sept. 3, 1916, the Kenji party came over to Nagatoro from Kumagaya via Yorii . Because various kinds of rocks can be seen in the small range here, many people who learned geology visited here from the Meiji era. So Nagatoro is said "the Japanese geology birthplace". And Kenji also visited here and composed some tankas.
大正5年9月3日、宮沢賢治たち一行は、熊谷から寄居を経て、長瀞までやって来ました。
長瀞は狭い範囲にさまざまな種類の岩石を見ることが出来るため、「地球の窓」「日本地質学発祥の地」といわれ、明治時代から地質学を学ぶ人が多く訪れました。
賢治もここ長瀞でいろんな岩石を見て次の歌を残しています。
つくづくと 粋な もやうの博多帯 荒川ぎしの 片岩のいろ
賢治は長瀞の「虎岩」という縞模様の片岩を見て、これを「粋な模様の博多帯」と喩えました。
午後四時に 親鼻橋を 吾立てば 蛇紋岩の 青く立つ見ゆ
幼少期より石に興味を持ち、「石っ子賢さん」と呼ばれていた賢治が長瀞の岩に甚く感動した様子が窺えます。
長瀞を散策した賢治たち一行は、この日 国神村（現在の皆野町）梅乃屋で旅装を解きました。
梅乃屋は明治から昭和にかけて、秩父を訪れた多くの地質学者が定宿とした宿で、今もその建屋の一部が残っています。
There is a monument inscribed on Kenji’s tanka in front of the Saitama Prefectural natural history Museum. The initial coordinate is here and the cache in which the final coordinate is written is hidden here. 埼玉県立自然史博物館の前には長瀞で詠んだ歌を記した歌碑があります。
