Geocache Description:

Let us go back to 6:40am on the 5th of June, 1964.

Standing at the cache, looking across at the red brick building across the road, you would probably see a flash in the sky behind. You'd hear a very loud bang and you would probably feel the ground shake.

This cache commemorates the Brown & Polson disaster. The explosion of the animal feed factory that stood pretty much where the supermarket is now. Brown & Polson, whose name is still above the doorway of the red brick building across the road (look at it from Falside Road) was a highly regarded manufacturer of various household goods, from starch, to cornflour and other products. It also produced animal feed. All of these came with significant hazards of explosion, as anyone who has seen or carried out the custard powder experiment in Science class can appreciate. Small particles giving a large surface area, a source of ignition and a violent reaction is the result.

Four men were killed and four men were badly injured that morning.
