At GZ have a wee look over at the house which is surrounded by a round stone wall. The house's name is Alma. This was established as a school house in 1839 by Sir William Maxwell of Calderwood. At this time the village of Maxwellton was known as Hogsmuir. Subjects taught included dressmaking, English, Arithmetic, Millinary and Natural Philosophy. By 1908 the school was used by only infants and in 1911 it was sold for £190 and converted into a house. It was later named ALMA by the owner after his wife.
