Born in 1841, the son of shawl-makers in Paisley. John Hutchison trained as an architect before setting up his own company in Glasgow. Sharing premises with his brother, a furniture maker, at the time that a certain Charles Rennie Mackintosh joined his firm and came under his mentorship. Some speculate that this mix of architecture and furniture design & making inspired the younger Mackintosh. The rest, as they say, is history.
The houses to the south of this cache were built on the grounds of his home, Fairhill House, where John Hutchison died in 1908 following a cerebral haemorrhage.
Despite the common surname, I am unaware of any family connection.
