Geocache Description:

Macrossan railway station was named after John Murtagh Macrossan, a local politican from the late 1800's with an interest in mining regulations and independence for north Queensland.

South of the railway line is an Army facility used for stores and training. It was orginally constructed in World War 2 and served as a fighter base, then a storage and repair facility for the RAAF; until becoming and army facility in 1956. Background information suggests the American forces favoured construction of temporary facilities during WW2, however the Australian forces constructed more permanent facilities.

'On 16th Sept 1948, an RAAF semi-trailer bus laden with civilian workers from the RAAF base Macrossan ran off the Burdekin traffic bridge, when the front wheel ran up the bridge kerbing.  There were no bridge railings, and the bus went over the bridge, and landed upside down on huge rocks in the dry river bed. Thirteen people died as a result of the accident'. There is a memorial to the 'Macrossan smash' near the corner of Flinders Highway & School Street in Sellheim.

The cache is north of the train line (Flinders Highway side). At the time of placing the small screw top cache had a log sheet, pencil, and local mining themed badge (FTF).

Replaced with a tube April 23, careful with the wire.
