Geocache Description:

Gold Star families are families who have lost a member through military service. The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at Stage One is a reminder of Nevadans lost in service and a tribute to the families they left behind.

The first time I visited this memorial it was new and appeared unvisited.

The next time I came I noticed pennies, a nickel and a dime. I had to look up their meaning on the Internet. This is what I found: Leaving a penny at the grave (or in this case the memorial) means simply that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served together in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when he or she was killed.

Here is how to find the final. After visiting the memorial, stand to the north of it, looking south and beyond it to the Gold Star Flagpole. Note the two tallest blocks of stone. Those two blocks frame the silhouette of the saluting member of the military. Count all the letters of all the words that are visible on those two silhouette blocks, but only as seen on the north side. (Ignore the south sides. To be certain you are looking at the correct sides of the correct blocks, note their first letters of G and A.) From the total number of letters subtract 39. Let the result be A.

Count the letters on only the left silhouette block, again as seen from the north. (This is the block that has a big gold star at the top.) Subtract 2. Divide by 10. Let the result be B.

Multiply B by 2. Let the result be C.

Count the letters on only the right silhouette block (again as seen from the north). Divide by 10. Let the result be D. The final is at 39 31.9AB -119 46.6CD
