Whalebone Junction, named for several old whale bones that washed ashore during a storm on Hatteras Island and assembled nearby to make up a 72-foot whale skeleton, is an area within Nags Head, North Carolina where three major highways converge. The whale bones are no longer around but today the junction marks the eastern terminus of both U.S. 64 and U.S. Route 158, while NC 12 traverses the junction from north to south. The junction is a major landmark on the Outer Banks, as U.S. 64 to the west and U.S. 158 to the north provide the only highway links to the mainland. NC 12 is the main road linking all of the Outer Banks from Corolla to Hatteras Village 95 miles to the south and, with a ferry ride to Ocrcoke Island, on down to Ocrcoke Village.
Congratulations to KathyIrene01 for braving high winds and torrential rain to grab a FTF.
