Geocache Description:

Posted coordinates should bring you to a place where you can sit and contemplate the symbolism of the structure in front of you.

Not so long ago, if you were sitting or standing at GZ, you would be looking at trees and weeds and lots of dirt tracks used by people on motorbikes, ATVs, and mountain bikes. I used to ride my mountain bike through and around here, and I still do on the few trails and open areas still extant.

The sculpture you see here is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Kamenetz, former Baltimore County Executive who died in office in May of 2018. At the time of his death, Mr. Kamenetz was seeking the Democratic Party nomination for the Maryland Governor's race.

Edward St. John, chairman of a well-known local development company, has credited Kamenetz for urging developers to make the size and scope of the proposed mixed use development in this area comparable to a similar development in Howard County.

In 2012 Kamanentz challenged developers to return to the drawing board and configure a new section that reflected the most creative and forward-looking thinking for mixed-use communities. According to Mr. St. John, "None of this would have been possible without Kevin’s urging, vision, support, and leadership.”

As of September of 2019, the new development already has more than 6,000 workers, many of them employed by a local toolmaking giant that has leased 77,000 square feet as part of a corporate expansion.

The development will have single-family homes, town houses and apartment units as well as close to 4 million square feet of commercial and retail space when it's built out in the coming decade. A 120-room national chain hotel opened there last year, and there is hope for a large grocery store to take the spot opposite the hotel.

The sculpture, titled "Turning Winds," is a 20-foot brushed metal sculpture with two intertwined wings. It was designed by Eastern Shore artist Will Hemsley, and is located next to the luxury apartments at the center of the development off Route 43 in White Marsh/Middle River.

Have a seat and check it out. Please rehide as you found it, or even better.
