Pithari Taverna
28 Woodbridge Ave.
Highland Park, NJ

Enjoy delicious food and good company as this wacky cruise ship voyages to the Southeastern European country of Greece! It’s been over 7 years since passengers on the cruise have been able to savor Greek cuisine, so we are returning to islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas along our way to future ports of call!

A taverna is a small Greek restaurant that serves Greek cuisine. The taverna is an integral part of Greek culture and has become familiar to people from other countries who visit Greece, as well as through the establishment of tavernas in countries such as the United States and Australia by expatriate Greeks.

This is one such place - with many authentic Greek dishes stemming from the finest Hellenic ingredients and traditional methods of cooking!

Greek tavernas serve many delicious appetizers, including:
  • Dolmades - stuffed grape leaves with rice and herbs
  • Gigantes - giant Greek beans in tomato sauce
  • Horta - select dandelion greens
  • Humus - chickpea, tahini and garlic dip
  • Keftedakia - seasoned meat balls, served with imported Greek yogurt
  • Loukaniko - grilled Greek sausage
  • Melitzanosalata - roasted eggplant dip
  • Mydia Krassata - mussels in port wine sauce, feta cheese and herbs
  • Piperyies Florinis Yemistes - roasted red peppers stuffed with spicy feta
  • Saganaki - flaming pan seared Greek graviera
  • Tyrokaterfi - spicy feta cheese
  • Tzatziki - yogurt, cucumber and garlic dip
Greek tavernas provide many delicious soups, such as:
  • Avgolemono - egg-lemon soup
  • Tasolada - beansoup with green lentils, tomato and extra virgin olive oil
  • Tomato soup - creamy homemade tomato soup with Greek pasta
Greek tavernas also offer a variety of lamb, beef, chicken, seafood, pasta and vegetarian entrees, including:
  • Arni Yiouvetsi - slowly cooked lamb shank in a homemade tomato sauce over orzo
  • Kotta Paidakia - grilled chicken
  • Lahanodolmades - cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef and rice in an egg-lemon sauce
  • Mosharaki Stamnas - beef cooked in tomato sauce with eggplan, zucchini and potatoes
  • Mousaka - eggplant, potato, ground meat and béchamel cream
  • Papoutsakia - stuffed eggplant with vegetables, herbs and bechamel
  • Souvlaki - chicken or pork kebab
  • Spanakopita - spinach and feta cheese in phylo dough
  • Thallasina Ellinika - shrimp, scallops and crabmeat sautéed in natural orange juice, with pears over rice
  • Tsipoura Sta Karvouna - wild caught porgy fish
  • Yemista - stuffed tomatoes with rice and herbs
The Greek version of “cheers” is YA MAS, which means “to our health”. As in other countries, you clink glasses when you toast. In fact, there’s a theory that this tradition originated with the Ancient Greeks. By clinking your glasses together your drink would slosh into the other person’s glass and therefore if it was poisoned, they would be poisoned too!

There are 10 parking spots in the parking lot behind the restaurant on South 7th Ave. There are also a few parking spots out front on Woodbridge Ave. If both these areas are full, you can park at the Parking Area Waypoint across the street at the Bank of America.
