                                                           ST THOMAS ANGLICAN CHURCH

This Historical building is the Oldest Church on the Eyre Peninsula.

The Nave section was the original Church built in 1849.

The Architect was Henry Stuckey and builder J Garrett.

There was a delay in construction due to the loss of timber on the trading schooner 'Jane Flaxman' when it was lost at sea in may 1850.

The original roof was clad in Tasmanian Wood shingles. In 1876 additions of a sanctuary and transepts were added.

The land of 1 acre for the Church was given by the Govt with a cash grant towards the cost of the church .

First service was held 21st January 1852 and conducted by Archdeacon Hale from the Poonindie Mission station.

He conducted weekly services until Octavis Hammond the mission medical supervisor took Holy Orders to become 1st encumbrant .

He was rector for 22 yrs.

In 1876 additions of a sanctuary and transepts were added. The illuminated commandment tablets and stained glass were crafted by Ferguson and Urie and installed by Mr Soar a local glazier. The windows typically would have been plain diamond quarry glass windows with stained glass border of alternating red and blue seperated by small stylised passion flower of yellow and white and rows of coloured dots around inner edge. These windows were replaced over time by more expensive memorial windows.

The foundation stone was laid on the eastern wall and a new bell hung in 1893.

The Church has a National Trust classification listing.

You are looking for a micro with log only.

Have placed the final of the cache close to where Earthlight can maintain .

As travellers around Australia we felt this Church was worthy of a cache due to it's Historical value and am unable to locate a local cacher who can maintain for us.
