This cache honors the highest point in the state of Maine, Mt Katahdin.
Katahdin also serves as the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail (AT). You do not have to hike the entire 2,160 miles of the AT to summit Katahdin. There are many shorter routes, the most popular of which is the Hunt Trail from Baxter State Park. It’s a strenuous, class 2, hike meaning you will need to scramble over boulders with your hands on certain portions of the trail. The round trip length is ten miles requiring 8 to 10 hours.
The Hunt Trail co-exists with the last miles of the AT. Time your trip for the spectacular New England Fall foliage and you might end up hiking with AT “through-hikers” who are finishing up their 4 to 5 month journey. You can con-celebrate on the top of Katahdin!
While it might not be an overriding incentive to visit Maine, you might find signs serving Lobster sandwiches in of all places, a McDonalds. Who said geo-caching is not an educational experience?
