Geocache Description:

This is a church micro cache that is placed near the St Mary's church Burlescombe which is in the village of Burlescombe. Burlescombe is a village and civil parish in the Mid Devon district of Devon, ... The parish church dedicated to St Mary is chiefly of the time of Henry VII (1485–1509) and was renovated in 1843.

The Churchyard is divided into two areas, the original upper part and the lower churchyard, which was consecrated as a memorial after World War 1. The box tombs are listed structures.

Standing on the church path, facing the gate one may see built into the stone wall on the left side an memento mori in the form of skull and crossed bones, this was a reminder of human mortality. Memento mori is Latin for “Remember death.” The phrase is believed to originate from an ancient Roman tradition in which a servant would be tasked with standing behind a victorious general as he paraded through town.

There are five bells by Pennington 1637-40 with a treble added in 1909. In 1974 the bells were removed from the tower, retuned and rehung.

The West End of the church has been floodlit since 1988.

You will need to collect some information around the church grounds and do some simple sums (you do not need to enter the church itself) this will help you to obtain the correct co-ords to find the cache.

First you will need to go to the posted co-ords that will take you to the grave in memory of George Gillham who died Dec Ard 1890 and Mary Ann Gillham who died aged 5Byrs

Now go clockwise around the church to the far left corner to the headstone in memory of Violet Eileen Ward who died 2Nov 2008 and Maurice (Pat) Ward who died aged 8Dyrs

Next you will need to go to the opposite corner of the churchyard but still on the upper level where you will find a gravestone of Isabella Wonson, the number of spikes on the railings that surround the grave will give you E4

Last but not least you will need to go down the grass slope to the lower level of the churchyard, to the gravestone of John Henry Cush who passed away May Fth 1938 and Emily Jane Cush who passed away May 11938

By now you should have collected all the info that you need to find the cache!

The cache can be found at : N 50 (B)(G).(E+F)(C-G-A)(G-A)  W 003 (C-D)(C).(E)(D-B)(A+F+E)

Checksum - A+B+C+D+E+F+G = 36
