Geocache Description:

From the museum's wiki: "Guangdong Gongyuan was the place where the imperial examinations were held at the provincial level in Guangdong during the feudal era of China. It was built in the Southern Song Dynasty and moved many times in history. In the 23rd year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1684), it was settled in the southeast corner of Guangzhou’s inner city. Enli is the east end of Wenming Road, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China. Its scope includes the old museum of Guangdong Provincial Museum, the east of Wenming Road Main Building of Guangdong Zhongshan Library and Guangdong Experimental Middle School. In the Qing Dynasty, Guangdong Gongyuan was once called the four major Chinese Gongyuan with Shuntian Gongyuan, Jiangnan Gongyuan, and Henan Gongyuan. The only remaining buildings are the Dragon and Tiger Wall and Mingyuan Building."

Most of the display space and historical materials are related to the official examination system during the Qing period. The display includes a highly realistic scale model (try matching the characters in the historical photos and the replica on display) of the thousands of exam halls (1.3m deep, 1m wide and 2m high) and detailed material on the multi-layered examination procedures. Those who achieved the national highest echelons from Guangdong province are listed.

The alleyway accessing the area has been upgraded in 2019 with new paving, and the museum was established fairly recently. It's an interesting museum with historical photos of the area, and also a place to step out of the hot weather.

Hidden away in some attractive Guangzhou alleyways: what better place for a museum?

The museum is open 9AM to 5PM, Tuesday to Sunday. The cache is always accessible.
