BRUCE, DUSTY and ME Third in my series of geocaches that highlight places of my misspent youth in Rockland County.
It was named Studio 914 and existed in Blauvelt from 1970-1978. I lived right behind it in my younger years. Many famous musicians recorded in this defunct gas station turned recording studio. Bruce Springsteen recorded his famous album, Greetings from Asbury Park right here. Not to mention his classic hit: Born to Run. Janice Ian recorded her famous ‘At Seventeen’ at Studio 914. Dusty Springfield, who stayed in the Tappan Zee Manor Hotel recorded an unreleased album here. And an unknown punk rock band, the Ramones set down a few tracks here, as well.
I can recall, as a young girl of about eight or nine, standing next to the brick exterior of the building for long periods of time and listening to music emanating from its walls. Really. This was before cellular phones and kids had to find unique ways to entertain themselves. My friends and I would dumpster dive here for broken drumsticks and reel to reel tapes. Boy, do I wish I had saved some of them. I never knew who these very cool musicians were until much later in life.
I was glad to see that Studio 914 finally had some recognition when the historical marker was put up. Enjoy reading its history while looking for the geocache.
