The BCS Series

Welcome to GMT's BCS (Basic Cache Series!!). This series is designed for newer geocachers who may not be as familiar with different types of geocaches or where to begin on these! LB2 is "Letterbox 2" and this cache is meant to be an introduction to Letterboxes!

What is a Letterbox Geocache?

Letterbox Geocaches (or more accurately, "Letterbox Hybrids") are based on a game called (not surprisingly) "Letterboxing". Because Letterboxing started in 1854, GPS units were pretty rare, and people used written directions to find the "box". Some Letterbox geocaches use these type of written directions, others just place the cache at the posted coordinates.

Letterboxes that use written directions typically have them in one of two forms:

  1. Instructions that say things like "Follow the path until you come to a fork", or "Look for the largest tree and then go 100 paces west".
  2. Instructions to project a waypoint. For example, "Go 250 feet at a bearing of 183 degrees".

All Letterbox geocaches should contain a rubber stamp. Note that these stamps are NOT SWAG and should always be left in the cache. Letterbox hunters often keep a notebook of some kind to "collect" stamps from the letterboxes they find. Additionally, they often have their own personal stamp that they leave in the logbook of the letterbox. These steps are optional in geocaching but can be fun to do!

Occasionally, when looking for a geocache, you will find a true Letterbox! Now you know what they are!

This Cache

This Letterbox-Hyrbrid cache is NOT at the posted coordinates! There is a "Story" below that if you follow it, will lead you to the cache! Start at the posted coordinates and follow along with the "Story" to find the cache!"

I had a dream that I was on an island. I stood at the edge of the island and looked out. I could see a large "river" to my right, and the "river" was teeming with traffic. As I stood there, I could see a number of white lines, marking my path. I stepped forward...

I crossed not one, not two, but ten of these strange white lines, all the while keeping the "river" on my right. The lines ended strangely at another "island".

I crossed the island and saw the path again. I continued counting these strange white lines, and when I reached the fourth one, I stopped. Something had caught my attention...

As I looked left, I noticed a strange "tree", about 50 feet away. It was growing in a place a "tree" should not grow. I walked over to it to examine it further.

The tree was leaveless, with a perfectly round trunk that was smooth to the touch. It was unlike any other tree I had ever seen. The sun had set, but strangely, when I looked up to see the top, I was blinded by a bright light. I quickly turned my eyes downward, and noticed a square "box". I lifted the box and discovered a treasure...

My eyes opened. Was it a dream? Was it real? What is real? I would lay there and wonder for some time...

Hopefully you can follow the clues to this "traditional" letterbox-style cache! Be sure to sign the log and remember the tiny stamp is NOT SWAG!
