Geocache Description:

The obsession of railway lines, bicycle tracks and caches continues by this CO!

This is version II of this cache as the previous one, although a great hide, ended up being a collector's item - twice. I've chosen a different place within 80 m of the previous cache and decided to include it in the Rosstown Railway Series. This cache, after all, is at the junction of the current Dandenong/ Cranbourne railway line and the Rosstown rail track from the 1890s. At this point, one can reflect on the history of the railway lines in the area and marvel at the new Skyrail construction. It lies between Hughesdale Station that you can see from the crossing here up the ramp of Skyrail, and Oakleigh Station.

On this map, ( thanks to Goggle), you can see the curve of the Rosstown rail route from Murrumbeena Crescent at Poath Road - winding towards the Junction II cache- now roads and parkland.

Destined never to be used but always a dream. William Murray Ross built the never to be used Rosstown Railway first in 1883 and then had to be redone in 1887-8 due to the shoddiness of the original build. It was to carry produce from his other failed venture in the area the sugar beet mill. ( the Northern Queensland Sugar cane industry would have probably ended it time anyway. ) There was a lot of concern from the market gardeners in the area that his mill would use all the water supply available in the area. The railway fell into disrepair quickly as did the sugar beet mill. Carnegie was known as Rosstown until the early 1900s but its namesake hotel still stands on Dandenong Road in Carnegie North. The railway would have been useful in today's age as it would have linked the Dandenong Line /go under the Frankston Line and eventually meet Sandringham Line at Elsternwick.

You are looking for a camouflaged bison with a log only. This is a pedestrian throughway so watch out for muggles.

Please be gentle with the cache and make sure that after your excitement of finding it, you replace it as found for the next finder. (n0w0rries scored the FTF by seconds for the original cache - as a crowd arrived here pretty rapidly after publishing I am lead to believe.) FTF for this one goes to n0w0rries - I supposed that was meant to be !

The other caches left in the series are - ( most have been archived January 2024)

  • Trainspotting
  • Rosstown Multicache - Take a Ticket.
