Founded in 1860 by the Rhenish Mission Society and named after Johan Keetman, the town still retains vestiges of its original German buildings.
The stone Rhenish Mission Church is the oldest building in Keetmanshoop, and now home to the Keetmanshoop Museum.
This church was built under the supervision of the reverend, T. Fenchel, by Nama members of the mission congregation after the previous church was washed away in 1890 by the Aub river. It was inaugurated on 8 May 1895.
In addition to religious memorabilia, the museum contains a display about Nama history and culture with a detailed display of local plants and their traditional uses by the Nama community. It further features aspects of geology of the area.
