“Gabagool” is one of many pronunciations of “capicola”, a delicious Italian deli meat.
But how did “capicola” become “gabagool”? The explanation is to take the word “capicola”, drop the last vowel, and pronounce a “c” like a “g”. Gabagool!
It’s a fascinating bit of linguistic history. Many people immigrated to the US from Italy around the turn of the last century. Their old country regional dialects came with them. Pronunciation across those regional dialects varied greatly. Now, several generations later, those pronunciations have evolved into our own distinctly American dialects.
