Dead Centre Devonport
Historic and heritage value
The town of Devonport did not have a major cemetery until the opening of the ‘New General Cemetery’ late in the year 1922. Prior to this, the deceased were interred at one of the three small Torquay burial grounds, the Bluff Cemetery or at either of the two small cemeteries at the Don.
This cemetery is located in the City’s outer precinct and it is the largest of the three cemeteries in this area (the others being St Olave’s and the Congregational Cemetery).
(The first General Public Cemetery was in the vicinity of the Devonport Bluff and caravan park. Original headstones have been gathered together in a fenced area and is the starting point for a Multi-cache called "Old Old Cemetery". You might like to go and find this one.)
This Devonport Cemetery is closed to further burials except under exclusive existing burial rights. The new or current cemetery is at Quoiba not far from here, and is a lawn cemetery with memorial gardens and several columbariums. You might like to search for "Dead Centre Mersey" here.
Cache will be found without bending, magnetic, and needs to be replaced on its metal receiver where you found it. Thankyou for your care. It contains log only. No room for other stuff !
