Geocache Description:

Akko is steeped in over 4000 years of history from the periods of the Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Mamluk, Ottoman and British.

In the 13th century, Akko was the capital of the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem, prospering trade connecting Europe and Asia. It was the largest Italian Port Colony in Israel as well as prominent French merchants traded here.
Napoleon was defeated in the siege of 1799. The  city walls were fortified in response by the Ottomans.

After visiting the UNESCO site of the crusader knights kingdom of the St John's Hospitaller Order, wander through the old city and enjoy the port and market.

Look up to see the St Mark’s winged lion of Venice with the Bible guarding the entry to Khan El Faranj.
Follow the local upcycled art along the walls leading you to GZ.

Khan El-Faranj was built in mid-16th century by French merchants in the central courtyard of the Venetian quarter during the Crusader Period.

The peak of the merchants activity in Akko peaked in late 18th century when they were banished by Jazzar Pasha in 1791.

Pasha then took over the cotton trade, which the French previously had a monopoly hold on.

In the early 18th century, the Governor of Akko lived here for security; to keep a watchful eye on the French merchants, and ensure efficient tax collection.
