This is a short, easy multi to introduce you to the North Plains murals. The murals give onlookers a colorful display of some of North Plains’ historical past, and add beauty to the drab metal buildings that sit in the heart of town.
You will collect info at four stops along one long block before going to the final. All waypoints and the final are wheelchair accessible.
The posted coordinates lead you to a parking lot. You can start there.
A: On the building on the east side of the parking lot, there is a long mural showing groups of people. How many people are in the group at the far left end? (Look left of the people having a tea party at the round table.)
Add that number to the number of black rubber caps covering USB ports on the green Solar Charging Station on the sidewalk. (Look above and below the shelf.)
A = Number of people + number of port covers
B: Just east of the green Solar Charging Station is a sign board with a map titled “Downtown North Plains”. There is a legend at the bottom that shows the colors used for the different trails, bikeways, and tours. Count the colored, curvy lines in the legend, including the dotted one, and then subtract 4.
B = Number of curvy lines minus 4
C: Waypoint C is “A New Railroad Town 1911” sign board. There are two articles, bottom center of the board, with white backgrounds. Look at the one on the right titled “OLD TOWN TURNS”. The last sentence starts “A short time ago the dozen or more buildings on the old town site were ____ ____ ____ … “ Count the number of letters in those next three words. Then subtract 3.
C = Number of letters in next three words, minus 3
D: Waypoint D is “A Railroad Town 1911” sign board. The column at the top right starts “...taken to safety,...” Look at the third word below “taken”.
- If if is “west”, D = 7
- If it is “train”, D = 8
- If it is “silver”, D = 9
E: Waypoint E is the NORTH PLAINS GARDEN CLUB bench to the left/north of Waypoint D. Who is the bench in honor of?
- If it is Past, Present and Future Members, E = 4
- If it is North Plains Chamber of Commerce, E = 6
- If it is Veterans of Foreign Wars, E = 8
The total of those 5 digits (the checksum) is 36.
