Geocache Description:

This is one of 12 caches placed for CAM 2020. You are required to find the nine physical caches and have your choice for number 10. It will be between 2 virtuals and a wherigo.

If you find all twelve, you will receive a special icon to download and put on your geocaching profile. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all of the caches, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

CAM 2020 - Welcome to Chesapeake City

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

Chesapeake City was originally named "The Village of Bohemia" or "Bohemia Manor" by Bohemian colonist Augustine Herman but the name was changed in 1839 after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal) was built in 1829. Today, the town contains numerous old homes from that era that have been converted into bed and breakfasts, restaurants, shops, and the local historical museum. Some others serve as private residences for the "newer" community members. You will tour the South Chesapeake City Historic District learning about the building of the canal and the growth of the local community and economy while collecting information to help you find the location of the cache container. Each stage will provide you one of the numbers required to come up with the container location's GPS coordinates. Once you have visited the stages and collected all required information, use these coordinates to locate the cache container: N 39* 31.ABC W 075* 49.DEF.

Waypoint 1: In mid-17th century, Augustine Herman, a mapmaker and Prague native who served as a Dutch envoy, saw that two great bodies of water, the Delaware River and the Chesapeake Bay, were separated only by a flat, narrow strip of land. Herman proposed that a waterway be built to connect the two to shorten water travel between Baltimore and Philadelphia by more than 300 miles. Using information at this stage, find the Laborers' average daily wage. Note how many dimes for one day's work. This will be "A".

Waypoint 2: This building is considered to be the oldest in Chesapeake City and was first opened as a Tavern and Inn. The building was meticulously restored in 1983 by Allaire Dupont. As noted at this location, the doors' locks are replicas or original ones that were found in what part of the building? We will use the number of letters in that part of the building as "B".

Waypoint 3: Canal traffic initially created a thriving port, creating much growth. Homes, stores, warehouses and shops sprang up as canal traffic increased. A century later, though, the federal government took the canal over. Widening and deepening it, and later, an improved bridge, allowed supertankers to pass through without stopping, reducing visitor traffic. From the left side of the sign at this location, locate the first set of numbers, representing a year. Use the third number in that year as "C".

Waypoint 4: The park at this location was dedicated in honor of a Doctor and his wife, who were instrumental in early restoration of town buildings and establishing the Chesapeake City District Civic Association. Using the information, subtract the year the park was renovated and rededicated from the year the sign was donated by the Chesapeake City District Civic Association. The resulting single digit number will be "D".

Waypoint 5: This commercial building was built by Ralph Rees around 1914. It started as a store, and has also been an agency for cars, another store, and Town Hall. Using the information at this location, identify the types of "stores" it was at different times. Each type of store has the same number of characters. Use that number as 'E".

Waypoint 6: The National Bank of Chesapeake City was located here for 83 years from the time it was built until 1986. Note the year it was built and use the second digit in that year as "F".
