This cache has been archived.

treasuretortoise: I tried to add in new logsheets but the beefed up security due to Covid-19 made me too nervous to enter. Ah well, it had a good run. Thanks for all the finds!

I will go remove the container when the pandemic is over.

Geocache Description:

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery is the largest Buddhist temple in Singapore and was founded in 1921 by Venerable Sik Zhuan Dao as a place for Buddhist practice, to share the Dharma, and to provide lodging for monks. The monastery has one of the largest bronze statues of Buddha in Asia, and the Bodhi Tree on the premises of the monastery is a lineal descendant of the Bodhi Tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, which is said to be a descendant of the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India, the same one the Siddhartha (the current Buddha) meditated under and attained his enlightenment.

The first part of the name: "Kong Meng San", means "bright hill". Some sources say that the temple was intially called Phor Kark See Monastery and came to be known as what it is called now due to its location. On the other hand, the temple's website claims that “Kong Meng San” is the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s (Guan Yin Pu Sa) Pureland, and another source says that Bright Hill may be named after the monastery from its original name of "Hainan Hill". Hmm...

The second part of the name: "Phor Kark See" is translated as “the Monastery of Universal Awakening”, encapsulating the vision and aspiration of the monastery to reach out to all sentient beings to assist them in the path towards Nirvana.

The temple is open to the public and the cache is located at the picturesque "Dragon Pond", away from the crowds. After you are done logging you may want to explore the rest of the temple, but please behave respectfully and dress conservatively.

The gates are open from 6am to 7pm daily.
