Geocache Description:

The 'Portage Tracking Bug Hotel' is a regular sized container hidden along the Seward Highway near the location of the old Portage village, best approached from the southbound lanes of the highway.  Parking is at the nearby cache GC8EG3B PH Tree.

The area where the cache is located and the village of Portage sank 6-10 feet during the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake putting it below the high tide level which caused devastating floods. Residents quickly abandoned the area as it was impossible to rebuild. Little remains of the town today, but visitors to the area will find structural remains of home sites.  Only recently has some of the area risen above the 100 year flood plane making it suitable for rebuilding.  The 1964 Good Friday Earthquake was the largest earthquake in Alaska and the 2nd largest ever recorded.  An internet search using the term '1964 Good Friday Earthquake' will reveal a plethora of information for those interested!

This cache is best approached from the southbound lanes.  I do not encourage slowing down or stopping to turn left across traffic from the northbound lanes as it happens to be at the beginning of a passing area.

The short walk from parking may be a bit wet and muddy during warmer times of year but dont let that discourage you from making your way to the cache taking in the spectacular views!!!

Why a tracking bug hotel here???  Why not !!!  And hopefully, its location off the beaten path will insure that it's a happy safe place for all your bugs!!!
