The Fetcham War Memorial remembers those men of Fetcham that gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Great and Second World Wars. The memorial is now placed within it's own gardens next to St Mary's Church but was originally placed at the junction of River Lane and Cobham Road in the village.
The names of the fallen are recorded on the memorial, there is also a further memorial and booklet within the church that provides further details on these men.
I'm proud to remember these men each year on Remembrance Sunday when the community come together for the reflective silence to remember those who didn't return from the World Wars. I am a Cub Leader and we take part in the flag service during the event.
At the listed co-ordinates you will find the War Memorial. Use the inscriptions to calculate the required figures.
A = No. of letters in the forename of Private Alexander, who fell in the Great War.
B = No. of letters in the forename of Private Johnson, who fell in the Great War.
C = No. of letters in the surname of either man who fell in the 2nd World War whose surname begins with a W
Now move to Stage 2, you can find this by turning right after you go through the lychgate, you will recognise the style of gravestone you are looking for.
At the grave of Private Diment, use the available information to answer these questions
D = The month (Jan=1 etc) he died minus 4th digit of his solider number
E = Sum of both the final 2 digits of the year he died
F = (Sum of the 2 digit date within the month that he died) / 2
The cache, which is a little walk away (you may wish to relocate a vehicle), can be found at:
N51 1A.BCD W000 2D.EEF
[Please note repeated usage of some calculated values] The check sum of the calculated digits in bold you have calculated is 40, including the repeated value
As long as you don't coincide your visit with a service at the church there will be plenty of off road parking at the church.
My thanks go to Flatcoat Walker who allowed to collect a series of their caches a few days after they had been archived and to keep the containers for placement elsewhere - this is one of them.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Just-Us-Two know first at email@example.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
***** PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT *****
