This cache is a very short distance up the "Woof" trail. I recently discovered this short loop trail. The trail was named for Marvin B. Gameroff, A,K.A. "Woof". Mr. Gameroff, a Canadian who loved his visits to Stowe, purchased the Green Mountain Inn in 1982. He spent the next years renovating and restoring it. Mr. Gameroff loved the outdoors, and especially loved dogs. He owned a large piece of wooded property adjacent to the Stowe Land Trust Wiessner Woods. The public was welcome to hike and cross-country ski on his trails as well as those in the Wiessner Woods. At a few places along his trail system, he would have a box with dog treats for those who brought their 4-legged friends with them. Mr. Gameroff passed away in 2004. The current owners of his trail system continue the tradition of welcoming visitors to use it, and maintaining a box for dog treats.
The cache is winter friendly up to about 18 inches of snow. Although it is only a short distance above the parking area, you may need boots and/or snowshoes to access it depending on snow conditions. Follow Stowe village parking signs from Depot Street up the hill between two of the condos. Please park only in the upper section of the lot designated for visitors; the lower section is for the condo residents.
Feel free to explore the loop trail. The property owner informed me that a logging operation may occur over the winter to remove numerous blowdowns, resulting in temporary closure of that part of the trail. This cache, being close to parking and not near the blowdowns, shouldn't be affected.
