FTF: Yascherko congrats!

The station itself is one of the oldest and most beautiful in St. Petersburg (probably the second most beautiful after Avtovo).

Vosstaniya Square is very rich in fossils. In general, this station has many fossils, all marine life: sponges (everywhere - this is the same animal that lives today in almost all oceans and seas, and washcloths are sold in every cosmetic store.), Nautilus (opposite the transition to Mayakovskaya ), Sea lilies (ibid.), Brachiopods (everywhere), corals (everywhere).
It's all about the red limestone used to decorate the walls of the station. Like any limestone, it is a sedimentary rock, which means that everything that fell to the bottom of the ancient sea was cemented there for millions of years. The peculiarity of this station is that limestone is used here from two completely different deposits: in the central part - mainly Georgian, from Salieti, and on platforms and closer to escalators - Ural, from Nizhny Tagil. Between them, not only thousands of kilometers, but also 200 million years, since the ones from Georgia date from the Lower Jurassic (approx. 200 million years), and the latter from the Lower Silurian period (approx. 420 million years). But outwardly they can be distinguished only by representatives of the fauna.

Fossilization
Fossilization - is a set of processes that transform dead organisms into fossils. It is accompanied by the influence of various environmental factors and the passage of diagenesis processes - physical and chemical transformations, during the transition of sediments to rock in which they are included.
After death, first of all, the destruction of soft tissues occurs, then the voids of the skeleton are filled with mineral compounds. Sometimes these voids are pyritized, ironized, inclusions of calcite, amethyst, fluorite, galena, etc. can occur in them. During fossilization, the skeleton undergoes recrystallization, leading to stable mineral modifications. For example, aragonite mollusk shells are converted to calcite. There are known cases of mineralization when the primary chemical composition of the skeleton changes (pseudomorphs). So, calcareous shells are partially or completely replaced by aqueous silica and vice versa.
Dead tissue can be replaced by mineral compounds (pseudomorphs), most often silica, carbonate and pyrite. Such complete or partial replacement of plant trunks while maintaining the internal structure is called petrification.

To log this EartCache you must answer the following questions, then send me the answers. You do not have to wait for admittance, if there's something wrong I will contact you. Please answer using your own words, copy pasted answers will not be accepted
1. Touch the limestone. Describe the texture.
2. Choose one of these fossils and calculate its diameter.
3. Why do you think the sea sponge survived untill our days?
4. Upload a photo with yourself (GPS or an object) and the chosen fossil.

Because many people tried to cheat and add a fake log without actually visiting the site it is mandatory to add a photo, see question #4. Logs without answers will be deleted too.
