Groundwater is stored in geological formations below the earth's surface. The type of geological formation determines the quantity of water that can be extracted.
Important water resources in South Australia are protected and managed by being 'prescribed' under the Natural Resources Management Act 2004. Prescription means that the water resource must be sustainably managed to provide security for all water users, now and into the future.
Observation wells are wells with a small diameter drilled into the ground, which are used for level monitoring of groundwater and water quality analysis. Aquifers form an underground water reservoir where water reaches impermeable material such as a solid rock layer.
The South East confined aquifer of the South East Prescribed Wells Areas(PWAs) has been assigned a green status for 2018 because positive trends have been observed over the past five years. The status is based on five-year trends: over the period 2014–18, 82% of wells show rising or stable groundwater levels and all wells show stable salinities.
