The Original St. Paul's was built in 1875 as a temporary building made of using beach sand rather than building sand, and it quickly proved to be too small, and so was enlarged in 1881. However the enlarged church soon proved to be inadequate and plans to replace it were in place by 1939. Of course this was set back by the war, and the new church that you see today was completed in 1966 at a cost of £65,000. Some of the old stained glass from the original church was reused in the new and can be seen today. To most people the most striking aspect of this church is the beautiful east window. seen from inside with the daylight pouring in, or from outside after dark when the interior lights are on it is very dramatic. The window depicts the risen Jesus at the top of the middle window, and his disciple Paul (Whom the church is named after) directly below him, sheilding his eyes from the glare. The bell tower is also worth a look, with the large crucifix below a large church bell.
From a personal point of view, our family has history here, my mother and her three brothers were christened in the old church, where my grandparents and other members of my family were married many years ago. Not long ago I had the proudest moment of my life inside this church as I walked the oldest Waggers child up the alter to be married, the ceremony conducted by Rev Lower.
