De acordo com a tradição da vila alentejana de Campo Maior, a lenda de Nossa Senhora da Enxara tem origem num brinco de ouro oferecido a uma criança, por uma senhora.
A menina estaria a brincar, enquanto a sua mãe estava a lavar roupa no rio. Quando a menina se afastou da sua mãe, terá encontrado uma senhora, muito bonita, que lhe ofereceu um brinco. Quando voltou para junto da mãe, mostrou-lhe o brinco, e ambas foram ao local onde a filha disse ter encontrado a senhora. Quando lá chegaram, viram a imagem de Nossa Senhora numa pedra redonda. Esta pedra está, actualmente, na capela de Nossa Senhora.
A notícia do achado chegou rapidamente aos ouvidos da população, que acorreu ao local da imagem. Esta foi trazida para a vila, e decidiram erguer uma capela, a meio caminho entre o local do achado e a vila, na margem direita do rio. No entanto, todas as manhãs a imagem desaparecia, surgindo no local original. Deste modo, a apopulação decidiu que aquele deveria ser o local para a nova capela.

According to the tradition in the Alentejo village of Campo Maior, the legend of Nossa Senhora da Enxara comes from a gold earring offered to a child by a lady.
The girl was playing while her mother was doing laundry in the river. When the girl left her mother, she met a very beautiful lady wich offered her an earring. When she returned to his mother, she showed her the earring and both went to the place where the daughter said she had found the lady. When they got there, they saw the image of Our Lady on a round stone. This stone is currently in the chapel of Nossa Senhora.
The news of the finding quickly reached the ears of the population, who visited the location of the image, brought it to the village and decided to build a chapel halfway between the location of the find and the village, on the right bank of the river. However, every morning the image disappeared, appearing in the original location. Thus, the people decided that this should be the location for the new chapel.
