Vlêrmuisklip (“Bat Rock”) is a small rocky overhang near the town of Lutzville on the West Coast. It was used as stay-over shelter by pioneering travellers. The earliest written record of the “cave” and name as such is that of the diary entry on 15 December 1661 of Pieter Everaerts and his group on an exploration expedition to the north from Cape Town.
Other visitors included Governor Simon van der Stel , and Pieter van Meerhof, who
was the first European to reach the Troe-Troe River near Vanrhynsdorp. British
soldier also used the shelter during Anglo-Boer war (1899 -1902))
