This area of the Lizhiwan Canal restoration received a huge boost in profile when it was visited by President Xi Jinping in October 2018. Included in Guangzhou's old city renewal project, it's been turned into a creative and tourist-oriented neighbourhood featuring unique alleyways, trendy shops and a theme relating to Cantonese intangible cultural heritage. (The Cantonese Opera Museum is right there too.) President Xi checked out the fashionable nearby cafe, She Inn.
Having hosted such a high-profile visit there's little chance that this particular section of the old city's alleyways heritage is going to be replaced anytime soon.
The section over the red bridge where the cache is located was opened up in 2021 after renovations and repaving were completed. Take a seat and reach down for the cache.
