Jiangnan Xi was mostly built in the 1980s and has evolved along similar lines to Liuyun Xiaoqu in Tianhe. Streets have been narrowed or closed to car traffic while public pedestrian access is allowed and encouraged. Street upgrades include the installation of bollards, seating, landscaping, lighting and other design elements. Most importantly: shops have been permitted at the ground floor of buildings which were initially only residential. The shops have evolved over the last decade and are they are now predominantly cafes, restaurants and some bars.
The area to the south of Jiangnan Xi Road has remained partly gated, and has been much more permissive in allowing car access, and as a result has not thrived. To the north of Jiangnan Xi, where this cache is located, pedestrian-oriented design measures have led the creation of a vibrant and attractive network of streets.
The cache is at the upper level facing outward.
