During the Famine, soup was often served to those who attended school, and starving children would go to school as by doing so, they were also entitled to a free meal;
The Pound,
The cut stone wall construction in front of the Souper School. Originally this structure was up to 8 feet deep, with an access ramp to the left, before it was filled with earth, as seen today. The Pound was used to detain stray animals impounded on fair days. The same stream located behind the boat & picnic area across the street behind you, ran through the middle of the coral. This was used to water detained livestock.
