Oslava Vánoc je spjata s lidovými zvyky, které mají kořeny v pohanských rituálech a oslavách slunovratu, kdy se 25.prosince opětovně rodil Bůh Slunce. Noc ze 24. na 25. prosince, jako i noci následující, byla odpradávna považována za "svatou noc".
