Santa's Christmas Treats
Festive Roses
Santa Claus is muddled and puzzled all over the Christmas Festival
Christmas Day has arrived and Santa is decluttering and is removing all the baubles from his Christmas Tree. He has less than 100 baubles and is trying to box them up. At first he tries them in sets of 4 but he has one odd one left. He then tries them in sets of 7 but this also fails as he has 2 left over. Next he tries sets of 9 but fails again when he has 3 left. Finally in exasperation he dumps them all into a Santa sack and decides that it was a much better way to store them until next Christmas. Mrs Claus then asks Santa how many baubles they had but Santa didn't know and was about to pour them all from the sack to start counting them. But Mrs Claus stopped him because she worked out how many they had, based on Santa's attempts to box them earlier. Are you as clever as Mrs. Claus? Santa’s last attempt was to box them in dozens but he still has a surplus.
How many baubles were left over on Santa's final attempt? = A
Later in the evening Santa and Mrs Claus decided to eat some sweets. They had a very large box (bucket) of Roses each and had counted each others collection, noting that they had exactly the same number of Roses each. As they settled in and began watching Santa's favourite film (It's a Wonderful Life) they began munching their sweets. At the end of the evening Mrs Claus had eaten 1/9 of her collection of Roses and Santa had consumed 3/14 of his (he wanted to keep the rest for his midnight snack and perhaps a few for his breakfast). Santa had actually eaten 26 more Roses than Mrs Claus.
How many Roses did Santa eat? = B
How many Roses had they altogether before the eating began? = C
St. Stephen's Day has arrived and everyone is taking a well deserved rest. Santa's elves are sharing out a box of sweets. There are 5 elves and they got an equal amount of Roses each. These, they knew, were Santa's favourites (they also knew he had none left) so they each decided to give poor Santa 3 Roses from their stash. They Elves now had one more sweet than Santa's total.
How many Roses had each Elf to start with? = D
How many Roses did Santa have left on St Stephen’s Day before he met the Elves = E
A = Baubles
B = Santa
C = Together
D = Elf sweets
E = Santa on Stephen's morning
