QUARRY WOOD SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST (SSSI)
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Site code:1317 dated May 2006.
The woodland is predominantly composed of sessile oak with holly, birch and Scots pine. Beech, a non-native in Scotland, is dominant in places. Two main types of seminatural woodland are found:
The first type is found on the more impoverished, acidic soils. Oak is the dominant tree, with Holly, Juniper and Rowan in the shrub layers.
The second type is found on less-impoverished soils on the slopes. The canopy is dominated by Oak and Birch with some Beech and patches of Hazel below.
ASSESSMENT: The condition of the woodland as Unfavourable declining, due to the lack of regeneration of Oak and the stronger regeneration of Beech. Age structure across the site was also generally poor, with few veteran or young trees.

- Our nest is shaped rather like a bottle, usually with a roof and an entrance hole near the top.

- Look for me in woodland, gardens, parks and farmland.
- I am pretty in pink!
