Cat is embedded in the culture fabric of Kuching city, both in the traditional and the modern culture. A new cat sculpture standing about 7 feet tall known as the “Transformers of Kuching City” has been erected in 2015 near the water front of Kuching. The sculpture consisted of five metal cats positioning themselves around a circular pedestal, facing outwards in a guarding formation. The cat in the center stood up among the others with decoration featuring chest ornaments of the crest of Kuching North City Hall and other items made from traffic lights and various car parts. All the metal parts are welded together to form the three dimensional life like cat sculpture. Even without any moving parts, the sculpture still appears lively and ready to tell us a tale from the future.
The Scrape Metal Cat Sculpture is a Collaborative project between DBKU (Kuching North City Hall) and UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara) Sarawak. The Scrap metal is provided by DBKU while UiTM Sarawak Faculty of Arts and Design involves is involved in the design and construction of the sculpture.
