Jan 01, 2020 marked another year of (white, anglo-saxon) settlement in North Texas. While the land had been settled for generations by native americans, white settlers moved into the land surrounding GZ through the creation of the Peter's Colony. Now, this land around you is part of the town "The Colony" founded in 1973 but from their official history, it used to be called the Bridges Settlement.
> The Colony is located on the site of Bridges Settlement, which was established in 1843 and named after the family of John and Mildred Bridges and their sons, William and David. In 1844, the settlement became the first stop for Peters Colonists when another Peters Colony investor, Willis T. Stewart, opened the company's headquarters and a small general store there. He hired Henry O. Hedgcoxe to manage the office and be the company's chief surveyor. Though Hedgcoxe was a good administrator, his poor people skills provoked a great deal of mistrust regarding the company's surveys. This mistrust ultimately led to disgruntled land speculators raiding and burning the company office on July 15, 1852. This event is noted in Texas history as the Hedgcoxe War.
After this "war", the incorpation of Texas into the union and the civil war, several small settlements sprouted up in far south east Denton county. One of them was named "Camey Spur", which grew up off of the St Louis - San Francisco Railroad. One hundred years from the moment I placed this cache. a bustling community occupied the land complete with a-
> railroad depot, cotton gin (burned in 1924, rebuilt) grain elevator, two general stores, a non denominational church that was also used as a community center and a school (built in 1928)
The community lost its meager population in the 30's and 40's and has since been relegated to the history books.
> Today, the sole physical existence of the community is an abandoned water line in the Legends neighborhood in The Colony. It runs on a line east from the southern boundary of Bridges Cemetery to the city limits of Frisco
