Geocache Description:

Osječka katedrala

Izgradnja crkve Sv.

The construction of Church of St. Peter and Paul (which serves as a co-cathedral of Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek) began in 1894 at the initiative of bishop Juraj Strossmayer. That's why people of Osijek simply call it „cathedral“. After the demolition of the old baroque church, the construction of the „cathedral“ was finished in just 4 years, and since then (1898) the panorama of Osijek is unimaginable without its 90 meter high bell tower (which is the 2nd largest in Croatia and southeastern Europe). It was built of red brick in neo-Gothic style by German architects Franz Langenberg and Richard Jordan. The interior of the church is richly painted, which is atypical of gothic buildings. The church has 5 bells, and the largest one (which is located in the main tower, above the clock) is dedicated to St. Peter and Paul. During the Croatian War of Independence (1991) the cathedral was hit by enemy artillery more than 100 times. Restoration works have begun in 1994 and are still in progress as of today (when the „cathedral“ is already in good shape), and we can hope that in next few years it will shine again in its original splendor.
